Brontophobia is different from other phobias, because you can't just expose someone to it slowly and carefully to get them used to it. Overcoming brontophobia usually requires the patient being convinced through therapy that thunder and lightning cannot hurt them. It may also require them to do certain activities during stormy weather.

There are many different ways to overcome brontophobia. One way is to go through hypnosis. Some of the other ways is to talk it out with therapists or trusted friends.

Overcoming brontophobia may require setting up a very safe and comfortable environment in which thunder can be mimicked. Over time this technique may relax you for the actual event of thunder.

I used to have this problem. I was afraid of thunder, and any other loud, unexpected noises. This may sound silly, but the way I got over my fear was to get angry. Literally. I'd sit in my house during storms, and scream. I forced myself to get so mad I wasn't afraid anymore. Eventually, I wasn't afraid anymore.
