If you are making a paper doily, it is to just make a really fancier paper snowflake. Use tiny, precise cuts. Making a paper doily is similar to the are of Japanese paper cutting; called kirigami. You can look up Kirigami patterns online that will give you cutting ideas. Use soft paper that wont show folds, such as rice paper.

I make my own and the only way to do it is to keep trying different stitches together and when you get it the way you want it write the pattern down and you will have it for future reference. Or you can do a net search for it and that will give you ideas as well.
