Dogs are one of the hardest animals to detect when pregnant. They best way to find out is to take the dog to a vet and have them draw some blood. If your at home then there are a few things to look for: swollen teats, swollen belly, vaginal discharge, or mood swings. The dog will also "nest" when pregnant.

Some signs to look for are decreased appetite, decreased activity, vaginal discharge, and an increase in nipple size. Feel the abdomen, if she is pregnant, it will feel firm, and may be larger. Also feel for movement in the abodomen. Nesting in the final days before delivery is also common.

Unfortunately, unlike for humans, there are no urine or blood tests that can confirm pregnancy in the dogs. Well-trained vet can detect pregancy approximately a month after breeding.

A dog's pregnancy is 9 weeks, and at week 5 a dog will start gaining weight. Take her to a vet to be sure, they can do an ultrasound to confirm.

During early pregnancy dogs will have sudden behavioral changes and decreased appetite. A good indication of pregnancy is the size of the nipples. Pregnant dogs will have larger nipples and the tissue will swell. The dog's abdomen will feel firmer and will eventually increase in size. If there is movement in the abdomen it is a sure sign of pregnancy.

If she is pregnant you will be able to tell by how big and swollen she is getting. Her nipples will also become enlarged with milk. She will also make a place to whelp also. She will eat more and become more aggressive to a tendency also.

If she is staying by herself a bit more than usual that is one sign. Her nipples will stick out more, and of course you will see weight gain and a bigger belly. Best to take her to the vet to find out for sure.

There is no absolute visual way to tell if your dog is pregnant. The only way to know for sure is to take your dog to the vet for a pregnancy test.

As humans, dogs begin to exhibit signs of pregnancy. While only your vet can confirm pregnancy, there are some recognizable signs attentive owners may notice.
