How do you install GFCI without an external ground?

A GFCI must have a separate ground from the panel for it to work properly. Without the ground wire it cannot read the potential difference in the circuit and will not work.

You can install Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter outlets without an external ground because GFCI equipment does not require an external ground to function - it only checks for differences between the hot and neutral wires. Of course, be sure to install only no ground outlets (2 prongs NOT 3) if the outlet is not grounded.
