Maggots are flies in their larval phase of growth. They are usually white, or a light color. They resemble wiggling grains of rice usually in groups. If you have a live larva that you suspect is a maggot you could identify it by hatching it in a jar.

Maggots are found in moist environments or where there is decaying material. Maggots are a larvae and therefore do not have a hard exoskeleton. They are a white or yellow color and are no bigger than your fingernail. They are also segemented.
