Toddlers rarely marry, so there's no hard and fast rule about helping them through divorce.

If your family had been happy you would not be getting a divorce. Do what you can to keep your toddler's life secure and routine, with stable and trustable adults in it who behave in ways that are safe for the witness of a child. Children know when their adults are unhappy and naturally trust their caretakers.

You need to make sure that the child knows that it's not his fault. Make sure that he spends both time with his parents and that he knows BOTH of you love him even if you're not married anymore.

Do not speak negatively about the other parent. The child may determine that daddy is bad because mommy doesn't like him when, in reality, daddy and mommy just disagree. In time the child will learn for himself which of the actions and attitudes of his parents are wrong, but you do not want to destroy his sense of security.

Don't think that your child is to young to know what going on. He will become attached to you because he doesn't want to fell abandon. He'll cry when you leave the house and you will feel guilty. He will get over this when he sees that you return. Divorce is not easy at any age.

The best thing you can do is stick to a routine as much as possible and assure your child that mommy and daddy love them very much. You and your ex should also do things with the child together, put your pain and angry feelings aside for what is best for your child.
