In general, U.S. citizens and lawful aliens qualify for the federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), which is the successor to the Food Stamp program, if they have less than $2,000 in resources excluding their homestead. SNAP is administered by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) -- apply at USDA or at Social Security Administration offices.

Depending on which state you live in, there are financial limits based on the size of your family. You would need to contact the office that administers aid in your area and they will be able to tell you what the income limits are for your family size, and whether or not you qualify.

Get receipts together, along with birth certificates for children. Get your last income tax filing and income reports, along with receipts for utilities. Also, have bank records with you. Find out where your local human resource center is located. Take everything with you and ask for an application.
