Dulcolax should never be given to children unless directed by a physician. Speak to the doctor or nurse for how to administer the medication.

Giving suppositories to children seems like a difficult proposition: how do you get them to stay still for this admittedly uncomfortable procedure? Try to calm the child beforehand and ensure him that it won't hurt but might be uncomfortable. You can use KY jelly to assist in placing the suppository.

Have the child lie down on a bed or over your lap. Lubricate the tip of the suppository with petroleum jelly. Gently insert and hold the buttocks closed. The child might have an immediate urge to defecate, but hold the buttocks closed for at least 4 minutes.

Verbally comfort child. Wash and glove hands. Wet unwrapped suppository with water or water-soluble lubricant. Place child on side with knees bent toward chest. Open buttocks and gently insert rounded end of suppository into anal opening using tip of index finger then hold buttock cheeks closed about 10 minutes.

Child over lap, butt up. Apply k.y jelly. Push suppository in. Hold butt closed for 5 min. Don't worry if child cries, says it hurts (that's how it works). Child will do excrement in approx. 15 mins.
