Shop! At the malls, on line and look in magazines and sale ads. Pick out things accordiing to their interests/hobbies/house decor/car/music/jewelry/scents in lotions and candles they like. Gift cards are big for stores and resterants and put in a nice card. Start paying attention to the person and their tastes more and that will help you greatly.
