How do you determine if you have a leak in your underground pipe?

I have water pooling up in various places in my yard, could it be a pipe leak?

Assuming you have home insurance a lot of companies offer a service to trace and find leaks. Assuming your excess isn't too high you could call them out to have a look and get it done properly without paying an arm and a leg.

Turn off the water to the whole house. Record the meter when leaving for a few hours. When you come back, if the meter moved, it's a leak.

There are many things it may be. The easiest way to determine what is happening, is to take a shovel and dig up around the area. Be careful to ensure there are no wires in the area (cable, telephone, etc). If there is a pipe leak, the ground where you dig should be wet and saturated.

To detect a leak first make sure everything is turned off. Then take the cover off of your meter. Shine a light inside your meter and there should be another cover over the gallons used meter. Just lift it and see if the numbers are moving If so you have a leak.

Pooling water can be a sign of leaking pipes, but it is not always so. You yard might just be uneven, or have drainage issues. If the water is pooling only during dry times, however, you probably have a leak. You cannot check for sure on your own without digging up your yard; you will need to contact a plumber.
