I keep an airhorn next to the phone. If any company calls, give them a warning about the airhorn. They call again, I push the button and give an earful.

You defend yourself by having verifiable proof that you are not liable for the debt and if you are let them know you are willing to make arrangements.

After a while, creditors will sell the debt to a collection agency (CA). With CA's you can send them debt verification letters, where they basically have to prove the debt is yours. If they can prove it, try to negotiate a pay-for-delete where they'll accept a reduced amount to take it off your credit report. Original creditors won't do this.

Debt collectors or creditors are required by law to follow the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act. This law limits when they may call you, who they may contact, and what they may do to collect the debt. Reading this act, and knowing your rights is the best defense.

Do not give them electronic access to your bank account. Only pay off a debt when you have in writing that this is accepted as full payment, without recourse.
