You should lighten other areas of the room such as ceilings and floors if possible, introduce mirrors and glass shelves, etc to reflect light. Keep the natural atmosphere of the wood using wool, paper, more wood and neutral colours. Dont be afraid to mix different wood types.

You can break it up with book cases. Put in a gas fireplace. Hang a wide screen TV on it with a nice stand underneath the TV.
