With the lasso tool you can mark the object. After that you can make the picture bigger on a second layer. With color transformation you can choose the color of the edge. Now you just have to reunion the layers.

One way to achieve this is by mixing in a white color to the edges. For example, spray painting some white color onto the edges will make the edges seem less colored, thus giving the fading effect. Select the white color from the palette and the spray can tool, then, spray the edges of the picture.

Use the lasso tool to select the object. Select Achieving Selections > Modify > Feather or Inside/Outside Feather, then the amount of feather you want. The larger the number of pixels, the more feathering you will need. You can also view against transparency in filters to get an idea of how this will look.

Make your canvas size about 20 pixels larger than the photo. Select the photo. Feather x amount of pixels. Select inverse (Shift+Ctrl+I). Fill with whatever your background color. This way you can create fading/hazy edges on photo. You should use the gradient tool with background to transparent. Use the gradient tool to select the path and viola.

Well what you want to do is use the lasso tool and then modify with feathering. That will help create the effect.

Its called feathered edges for Achieving Selections > Modify > Feather or Inside/Outside Feather. Set an amount of feather you want. You can preview this against transparency in the filter to get a good sense of the feather. Larger images (i.e. those with more pixels) will need a bigger feather.
