The best way is to change 20% of the water every month. This will keep ammonia, nitrate and nitrite levels from becoming too toxic for the fish in your tank. Be sure to let the water sit in an open container for 24 hours if you are using municipal water that has chlorine added.

There are many products sold in pet stories that control ammonia such as liquids and fizzy tablets added to the water that neutralize it. There are also special rocks that sit in the bottom of a tank called zeolite that help remove amomonia. Be sure to clean the tank regularly, as ammonia can be caused by too much fish waste.

To control ammonia, don't overfeed your fish, and make sure to clean the tank regularly. Once you are do that, you can buy test strips to measure the amount of ammonia in the water. If it is still too high, there are products you can buy to reduce it.
