When buying reeds, request a plastic case to store them in. These cases will keep the reed from getting cracked and will last a long time. Make sure the reed is relatively dry before storing them, because they can accumulate mold if left inside the case damp for too long.

The most important thing is to have a good case or box for the reeds. Reeds are very delicate and can easily crack, chip or break. It is a common mistake of new saxophone players to leave the reed on the mouthpiece which is a bad idea because the reed can easily chip when the mouthpiece is put away.
