If you live in the right tropical area, bird of paradise are simple to grow. They don't need a lot of care or attention and are very hardy. I've grown them in both sun and shade. But they do best in full or morning sun. They bloom the best once their roots are root bound.

Rich soil, good drainage, and plenty of sun are all essential to growing this tropical plant outdoors. Water well during spring and summer growing months. If you are growing this plant as a potted plant, make sure to use a good fertilizer designed for tropical plants. Take it indoors before the first frost to a sunny window in cool climates.

Rich good soil and proper drainage is required. If you live in a humid tropical environment as is present in zones 8 or 9, you can be successful growing this plant outside. Inside, you must supply lots of sunshine and plenty of water during spring and summer, their growing season.

They require full sunlight, and during the spring and summer the soil needs to be kept moist with a regular watering schedule. Fertilize with water soluble fertilizer bi-weekly.

They will need a peat based potting soil. Beware of mulch because of this should come in contact with the plants stem it will start to rot. It should be fed each week with plant food. In winter, feed once a month. Always keep the temperature above 50 degrees and keep them in full sun or partial shade.

A bird of paradise can be treated like any other tropical plant. It needs plenty of sunlight and heat (remember, it grows in a tropical climate), and will do very well in a nutrient packed soil that absorbs lots of water.
