You can use almost anything, just don't make it too tight, and don't use too fine of a string or wire so as not to cut the tomato plant.

Using soft material (strips from discarded nylons work well), gently tie the main stem to the stake every six inches or so. Other growth, called "suckers", are then usually removed. Continue to tie the stem up as the plant grows.

It's best to use rag strips or strips of old panty hose when tying a tomato plant to a spike. If you use twist ties, it may injure the stem.

You need to use something kind of think like some yarn so it does not cut into the plant as it grows,and don't tie it very tight so the plant has room to still grow. so just rap the yarn around the stem and the spike and your all set.

Be very careful to put the stakes around your plant as soon as it goes in the ground- don't damage the roots by driving in stakes after the plant has grown. Use soft cloth strips to tie the vines to the stakes. Use cages or plant along a fence.

There is a green garden tape that nurseries or garden centers sell. Use this to guide the plant up the stake as the plant grows.
