How do transdermal patches work?

Medicine inside the patch is diffused into the body through the skin. It's better than pills. Acts quicker, doesn't damage your liver and one patch replaces many dosages of pills.

Transdermal patches provide a constant supply of the medication so they are easier to use (one patch per day instead of many pills) and help create steady plasma concentration of the medication. This does not mean they are panacea though

Some medications can be absorbed through the skin from a patch. Since it is administered through the skin instead of the stomach, its not better or worse, just different.

Actually this can allow the medication to work better/deliver a higher effective dose, by avoiding going from digestive tract immediately to the liver ('hepatic portal system') when most drugs are metabolized and deactivated. This will still happen slowly, but not as quickly as the so-called 'first pass' metabolism. add a comment
