How do retinal scanners work?

Are they really in use in government buildings?

Retinal scanners work by passing a laser (or other beam of strong light) through the first layers of the eye. Then, the reflections from the retina (back of the eye) are recorded with a camera. The pattern of blood vessels and structures is saved for later comparison. Only some government buildings use them, but not all.

Retinal scanners are the same as taking your fingerprint. No one has the same two retinas. I've heard that a very few amount of employers are using them now.
