Alcohol should not be consumed until 48 hours after you have finished your last dose of metronidazole. There are people who have severe reactions to the combination.

It is definitely not safe to drink alcohol while taking metronidazole. Taking both can lead to nausea, stomach pains, accelerated heart rate and shortness of breath. These symptoms can become severe.

Metronidazole (Flagyl (R)) will cause an increased plasma concentration of the toxic metabolites from alcohol metabolism, causing a prolonged sensation of the "hangover" effect. It is a rather unpleasant side effect, but will not cause any harm.

Studies have not really found a correlation between metronidazle, alcohol and dangerous side effects. But since antiobiotics are taken for infection, it is usually wise to avoid alcohol anyway.
