The first thing to do is check your plugs and wires making sure the gap is set correctly. Then check the distributor or the coil.

The best way to trouble shoot any kind of car is to read the manual. Not available? You can always find it online or take it to a repair shop.

With the Volvo 740 engine skipping is a common problem if this is happening it is a manufacturing fault and should be free to fix.

Most engine "misses" are due to a misfiring cylinder. I would check the plugs out. Chances are one is having problems. If they look worn then replace them. If one cylinder is misfiring the plug will look different. Otherwise it could be a coil or other ignition component causing problems.

You can start with trying a higher quality gas. Some cars specify premium gas and if you aren't using it due to the cost it could be causing problems.

If you are having a skip problem with your Volvo then you will need to have your engine checked. If this will not fix the problem then you need to have it replaced.
