Craigslist has listings for the NYC area itself and the outlying suburbs in the Hudson Valley and New Jersey. Looking through those will give you an idea of what to expect but in the end, I'd recommend going with an agent. Since you'll end up paying broker fees either way, they may as well be working for you.
