An artistic, though protective smock can be made from a used button shirt with long sleeves. Thift stores should have an oversized one. Decorate with multicolor splatter painting and replace standard buttons with colorful ones. Finally, turn up sleeves to just above wrists and sew cuff style with colorful buttons.

If you are looking to make a simple artist's smock for children, try taking a trash bag and cutting the two top corners for arm holes and make a simple slit in between the arm holes for the child's head. For an adult, wearing an oversized man's long sleeved shirt purchased at a thrift store works really well.

The easiest and cheapest way is to get old men's button up shirts and turn them inside out. These will fit pretty much anyone.

The easiest smock is just to take an old mans dress shirt and wear it backwards with the buttons on the back. It's the simplist way. You can also use old cooking aprons.

An artist's smock is basically an oversized shirt with poufy arms. You may find a commercial pattern by checking the "costumes" section of pattern books (ie Simplicity, McCalls, etc. ) at a fabric store. Or you can generate a similar effect by replacing the cuffs of a large men's shirt with elastic in a narrow hem. My kids loved theirs!

You can get an old cooking smock. Use that as a smock. You can also get a sheet and turn that into a smock too.

I would start our with getting a white apron or a pattern for an apron. Your white apron will eventually because covered in paint and many other things as you continue to work in it. Then you will have a really cool looking smock.

You can use an old robe that you don't use or decided to give up, wear it backwards and give go at it painting.
