It is difficult to tell for sure, but there are often visual clues such as touching his nose, not making eye contact, and other unusual body language signs. Sometimes statements are contradicting each other, the person is defensive or changes the subject.

Body language is everything. Clues to someone lying are: sweating, fidgeting, dilated pupils, high pitched voice, and lack of eye contact. Also when people lie they are often uncooperative, lack much detail, and frequent pauses in answering.

The most common way to tell someone is lying, is by no eye contact. Another one, in which as we speak scientists are testing, is that you will tilt your head left a little. 9 out of 10 people do this.

Always trust your "gut-feeling". That is the best lie detector.

You check on the consistency of the story given and do not interrupt. Keep in mind what is told and latter ask the for the same and you will most likely get a different version of the same story. While doing this note the way he maintains his glance since he will flicker his eyes more and change focus more if lying.
