Anyone offering a pure bred puppy for sale (whether it is in a store, by private breeder, or even by a pet owner) should have proof of the dog's geneology. Often this is done by providing registration to a club such as the AKC. If the seller is unable to provide such papers, I would be leary.

The breeder should have papers on the dog. They won't be able to register the puppy if it's not a pure bred.

One way to be certain that a Pekingese puppy for sale is a pure bred is if they come with AKC papers. To be certified with AKC, both parents have to be pure bred and registered with AKC, this insures you will get a pure bred puppy.

The easiest way is to contact the seller of the puppy has AKC registered papers. Get the name of the father and the mother dog and you can trace bag their lineage to see that the dog is purebred. Plus until recently, you couldn't even register mutts into the AKC.

The only way to be sure is to get the papers from the breeder / seller (you will need those anyway if you want to register your puppy).

Most pure breeds have papers that go with them. The main characteristics of a Pekingese is a smushed up face, long fur with an unusual comsistency, and short squwat legs. They were known in China as the little lion dog because of their large heads and fluffy manes.
