Choose your runner material out of a more duriably material, perhaps even something appropriate for the outdoors only. White glittery gravel, outlined in rope lights. An exterior carpet runner made from man made materials is less likely to show any wear than a thinner or natural material.

Cover it with a heavy duty plastic runner until just before the ceremony. Be sure to put up a sign or otherwise caution people not to walk on the plastic in order to avoid slips or falls. When removing the plastic runner, lift it straight up and carefully remove it.

Your ushers should unroll the runner just after the seating of the mother of the bride -- the last person seated before the ceremony. Then it is clean for the bridal party. Cautions: It can be messed up by the wind, so weight the edges every ten feet or so. If it runs over grass, heeled shoes will puncture it.

I would suggest waiting until just before the guest arrive to roll it out. Also, there are different types of fabric sprays you can buy to make it resistant to staining. Lastly, you could pick a colored runner, so that dirt would not be as noticeable.

Depending upon where you will be having your wedding, this can be quite difficult. There are a few things that you can do to help, however. Avoid having it put out until the last minute; having someone roll it out as you arrive can keep it clean and add drama. You can also cover it until it is needed.
