A transfer switch, or other means of preventing cross-connection with the primary power source is required. The primary power is connected to one set of terminals ("line-in" or in-coming), the generator is connected to a second set of terminals ("line in"). The breaker box is fed from the "Load", or out-put terminals.

It runs to a female receptacle (using properly sized wires) installed for this purpose. Your generator output is connected to that receptacle using a cord with two male ends.

Essentially, a main transfer switch must be connected to the main panel board. This acts as a safety switch when changing power sources--from the main feeder to the generator.
