The tree has natural defenses and you should not have to add anything to the tree. The best way is to just give plenty of water and the tree will take care of the rest.

Trees that are stressed tend to get pests. Reduce stress by applying 3 to 4 inches of mulch to a 4 or 5 foot radius circle around your tree. If you have borers, you can spray in late summer with an apropriate herbicide. Cottonwoods get a lot of harmless leaf spots - don't worry about them.
