How do I get an agent if I want to be an actor?

I'd like to start acting outside of my local theater group. How can I find an agent to help me?

It is recommended for the actor who is just beginning to hire an agent from a small actor agency. Notice how busy he is by number of people he represents.

First you need to have acting experience, without this, an agent is pointless. Once you feel like you have enough experience and expect to get decent roles, then you should look for an agent. The Screen Actors Guild (SAG) is a great place to find legitimate agents.

There are many talent agencies that specialize in helping people get started. Your search should be as easy as looking in the phone book or doing a web search. Ask other local actors who they use and whether they would recommend their agent. Make sure those agents are actually finding work for those people.

In order to get an agent you must go interviews, have head-shots and be able to convince the agency that you are worth their time and effort. If you think it will help may hire a professional acting coach to help you with a monologue that you can have prepared for your interviews. Be on time and take seriously.

For whatever area in which you live, I would type in various agents in your area, that are looking for clients.

There are a couple of ways to find an agent. One is to phone all the agents in your area and ask if they are taking on new clients - be prepared to have a monologue ready to show them. Another way is to attend acting classes that have agents attend on the last day to view the talent.
