I would recommend starting with a rough outline of his body and head then adding the ears and tail, from there you can fill in details. One way to do this is make a clear graph outline that you can lay over a picture and then fill in on an ideal paper graph what is in each box.

Start out by drawing the egg shaped eyes and the heavy eyelids. next draw the rounded triangle nose and the jowls around his mouth area should be rounded also. the ears should be directly above the eyes and slightly tilted forward, draw a big round belly and rounded paws, he has only three fingers and three stripes on his side.

Draw a circle. Draw two triangle shapes for ears. Draw two circles with a horizonal line for droopy eyes. Add small round nose and mouth. Shade in his tiger stripes.

Purchase a Lazy Lucy or a light table. Take a representative Garfield and lay it onto the machine. Begin by tracing the shape around the cartoon figure, preferably upside down. This will allow you to see the basic shape building blocks. Garfield is based on several large, overlapping shapes, like a balloon animal. Garfield is characterised by the frown.

There are a number of online sites that specifically tell you how to do this, or you can print out the Garfield you like best, and work from a tracing.
