The top portion of bifocals will adjust for seeing distance while the bottom portion will magnify things that are close to the eyes much like reading glasses.

These have becomed the preferred lenses for people who are getting older and do not want the stigma of having old bifocals.

When you are wearing bifocal glasses you soon get used to looking through the top half. This is your everyday prescription. When you need to see better you look through the bottom half. Usually this is reading or doing close work. As time goes by you don't even notice. It is better than carrying two pairs and switching.
