The phrase "molasses to rum to slaves" summarized the triangular trading pattern wherby molasses was exported from West Indies islands to America, where it was processed into rum, then the rum was shipped to Africa in exchange for slaves to work in the West Indian molasses factories & in America.

It kept one man rich, and the others only earning a pecentage of the possible income, with those lower down in the order earning a lower percentage.
