For years she refused to reveal the truth surrounding the events of her fathers death, choosing instead not to talk about it at all, or lying about details. She later revealed her mother had shot her father, revealing he was an abusive alcoholic.

Almost 20 years ago her father was shot to death by her mother. It was self-defense and the mother was not criminally charged.

Charlize Theron's father was an alcoholic. When Charlize was fifteen years old, he came home, drunk, and threatened to kill Charlize and her mother. Her mother killed him, in self-defense.

Charlize Theron's dad met a violent end. He attacked his wife in a drunken rage and Charlize's mother shot him in self defense. Charlize was 15 and witnessed this act. The incident was investigated and no charges were brought against Charlize's mother. Charlize has stood by her mother's actions.
