Liver disease is very common in dogs. It can be congenital as well as secondary to medications. There are certain medications that aggravate the liver. If your dog is on these meds for a long time, then you should be having bloodwork done at least every 6 months to catch any disease.

Liver disease in actually quite common in older dogs. Just like humans, dogs are more susceptible to disease as they age. Modern medicine has made treating such disorders easier to cope with for both the dogs and their humans. A healthy lifestyle and plenty of exercise can prevent the onset of such diseases.
