Question by  Droopy (58)

How close to do have to follow expiration dates?

I always see the dates on different products, but I feel bad throwing them away? How long can I wait?

The dates are there only for the retailer to safely sell them. Most products are good for a little longer, but it highly depends what kind of product it is and if it's been opened. It's fine a few days past, but always check the smell too.

Expiration dates are guidelines. Their accuracy can vary based on several factors, such as how the food is stored and when it is opened. Furthermore, many products have "sell by" dates which differ from expiration dates. Some products last beyond the expiration date, but if in doubt, throw it out!

If you want to be 100% safe you should always follow the expiration dates. Going past these dates can result in illness.

Dairy products you should always follow the expiration date. Snacks and other shelf items have a BEST BY or SELL BY date, but are still safe to eat afterwards.
