You can tell the gender of a rat by looking at it's genitalia. A male rat's testicles will obviously show. A female rat will have a genital opening that is rather closer to the anus than the male's. Female rat's also have nipples, and male rats do not. Females usually form nipples at about ten days after they are born.

Rats are in particular among mammals recognized for having unusually large testicles, located at the rat's rear end. Adult male and female rats are therefore quite easy to distinguish.

Carefully turn your rat over onto its back. A female rat will have nipples. A male rat will have testicles. Even young rats will have spots for nipples or testicles.

Male rats have large testes that can be located at the rear, near the anus. While females, has a small hole near the anus. In either cases, lift up the tail and look at the rear and belly area. The determination should be clear at that point.

If a rat and guinea pig are the same, you turn it over, holding it in your hands and supporting it with your fingers. Apply pressure with your thumbs just above the genitalia at the bottom of the abdomen. If a little "something" pops out, you have yourself a boy. Congratulation!

Rats are extremely easy to sex. Male rats have very large testicles. If you look at the back end of the rat it should be plainly obvious which rats are male and which rats are female. When they are very small, it is difficult to tell, but within a few weeks it should be obvious.

The most readily visible indicator of a mature rat's gender is the presence of testicles--they are very large and visible between the hind legs. They are still visible in younger rats, but a closer inspection will be required. Male rats also have oilier fur and a more distinct smell, unlike females' fur which is smoother and nearly odorless.
