Its not usual for fish to mate. The female fish usually lays the eggs and swims away then the male comes and fertilizes them. In some species of fish they watch their nest.

Get a fish book to see if your kind of fish carry inside of their bodies (you will be able to see them link up) or outside of their bodies (you will be able to see an egg mass that the male will fertilize).

Most fish reproduce by means of eggs. The female fish will usually release her eggs in a private spot to prevent them from being tampered with. The male fish will then release a cloud like sample of sperm in order to allow these eggs to grow and later hatch into a little fish.

well fish don't really mate. its like this the female fish just lays eggs and just swim away then the male fish fertilizes the eggs so theres no way to really tell. and of course you will know that there mateing if you see alot little new fishes in a few days.
