You cannot fully protect clematis from all diseases. A good way to decrease this chance is to buy from a good nursery with a good stock. Look for blight and aphids, any leaves that are gray, black or brown in color where it should not be should not be bought. Also when trimming, make sure the shears are sterilized.

Clematis is one of the easiest plants just plant it in the sun, give it a sturdy trellis to climb and make sure that you cover the roots and the lower part of the plant in shade. It doesn't like sun on the lower part of the plant. Plant another small plant on top of the roots for shade.

Always keep the soil around the base of your clematis free from weeds as they encourage pests which will spread disease. Make sure that you don't over water the plant. You may also consider wiping the leaves about once a fortnight with a very diluted washing-up liquid as this will deter pests which spread disease.

Disolve one tablespoon of washing up liquid in one liter of water in a spray bottle. Mist plant on a daily basis, this will protect from disease.
