Shingles is contagious from the time that blisters are forming until they have completely crusted over. However, a person must come into direct contact with the rash in order to be exposed to the virus - it is not spread through the air. Covering the rash can help prevent the spread of the chicken pox virus.

Most importantly, wash your hands frequently and avoid touching a shingles rash. Covering the rash can also help. Avoid areas with people that would be susceptible like children.

Shingles will only spread chicken pox to adults or children who have never had chicken pox. You should avoid contact with those people until the blisters have all crusted over.
