How can you find your Jewish tribe?

I have been wanting to do this for a long time but I don't know how to get started.

You should try searching Jewish newspapers, both nationally and internationally. Most belong to the American Jewish Press Association, which will list member publications.

I think that a jewish cultural or heritage center might be a place to look for something like that. I know a lot of really old ancestry information is missing.

Out of twelve Biblical Jewish tribes only three survived the destruction of the first Temple - the tribes of Judah, Benjamin, and Levy. The tribe of Benjamin later assimilated within the tribe of Judah. Today, the descendents of the Levites have specific last names such as Cohen, Levy, Segal, Katz. Everybody else belongs to the tribe of Judah.

As ten tribes have been presumably lost, there is a choice between the tribe of Judah and the tribe of Ephraim. A number of Jewish groups (India, Ethiopia and Nigeria) claim to descend from one of the lost tribes. Finally, the Samaritans claim to descend from Ephraim and Manasseh.

You can't find your tribe and in all reality, the idea of tribes is probably an artificial one. After the first diaspera, the tribe concept was completely lost. Families quickly intermarried. If you are Jewish then you are lucky if you can trace your ancestry back two hundred years, much less to biblical Jerusalem.
