How can I weatherproof a wooden gate?

I have a wooden baby gate that I want to use outside on the deck so my son doesn't fall down the stairs. The "outdoor" gates that I see in catalogs are over $100.

Just go to place like Lowes, Home Depot, or even Wal-Mart and look for any outdoor wood stain or varnish. Usually anything marked "outdoor" will be waterproof and fine for outdoor usage.

First, clean the wood gate very well, then use a high quality wood stain. Spread it on liberally and allow it to dry and set up for an hour or more. Then apply a polyurethane sealant. Spread the polyurethane sealant liberally coating the entire wooden gate make sure no spots are missing.

The only way you might be able to do this is stain the wood with something like thompsons water sealer. Other then that you could see how it holds up under weather since wood is natrually weather resistant. If you did use water sealer you probably could not use it in the house again however.

If you stain it that will help give it protection from the elements. But the best protection for wood left outdoors is paint. Using an exterior paint (after sanding and priming) will also keep it from splintering.
