If you feel that you need to limit your drinking and particularly if you have attempted to limit your drinking and failed, then you should start thinking about the possibility of alcoholism. Social drinkers can take or leave alcohol. Alcoholics need it, drink too much, and feel the need to hide their drinking. Stop before the consequences are too serious.

Social drinking is unlikely to cause life problems if a few rules are followed such as no drinking and driving. If there is any question at all, the way to be sure is to go to an alcoholism assesment program. They have written tests and interviews, and assuming the subject is honest, they are quite advanced in categorizing alcohol usage.

An alcoholic will likely drink alone, and at very inappropriate times, such as before work or an important task. Social drinking is when one drinks only with friends, in moderation, and in a party setting.
