How can I tell if my rat is male or female?

Male rats will have testes that protrude from the body to protect the scrotum from overheating. Female rats will have two holes, the anus and the vagina. This is visible right under their tale. The testes will be a sack like structure hanging below the tale and should be far more obvious than the females.

Holding the rat gently but firmly turn it over and examine the area near the tail. Rub the area gently; if a penis appears, its a boy.
