How can I teach kids to come up with games on their own?

My childs favorite thing is to play pretend. If you have a couple of action figures / animal figures or a couple of "dress up" outfits encourage them to play with them. They will be making up their own games in no time.

Train their imagination. Let them close their eyes and ask them what the first thing which pops in their mind is. Hand them a spoon and let them find another use for it.

Imagination is not something that can be taught, only allowed to develop. Perhaps engage the child or children in imaginative conversation, thus encouraging the use of independent thinking. Provide some tools and challenge the child/ren to return with a "game".
