How can I make a tie quilt?

I've heard of people doing this, but I don't really know where to start.

A tie quilt is made like any other quilt, with a designed or patched top, batting in the middle and a lining. Instead of stitching the layers together like quilting, you tie the layers together. You do this with yarn threaded through a large-eyed needle. Go through the layers, back up, and tie, leaving around one inch ends.

You would physically make the quilt the same way you would any other but you would need to start by getting everyone you know to donate ties to you.

If you don't have a quilting frame, layer your back, batting, and top. Roll it into a tight roll and use a yarn needle. You can find those in the sewing needle section of the store. Pick a type of yarn or crochet thread, make one stitch, pull the yarn through until you have the desired length, cut and tie.

Well, you need a bunch of ties. You have to make sure their all squared in proper directions. Then sew together.

You will need a LOT of ties! One good way would be to get a backing material the size of your desired quilt and then stich ties on top of that criss-crossing and overlapping until the entire thing is covered. Then finish it off as a normal quilt.

First you need a good source of ties and thrift stores will be the best place to look. Decide on your color scheme or theme and pick ties that go with your choice. Then decide if you want to makes squares of ties joined together and then made into a patchwork or if you want a more freeform style.

You need three layers: top, batting and backing. Pin your layers together with safety pins, so the layers don't shift while you "quilt". Thread a strong needle with yarn or embroidery floss. Insert the needle down from the top, in the location for the first "tie", and then back up about 5 mm away. Cut yarn, and tie. Repeat.

Get a bunch of ties from family or a thrift store. Stitch onto a backing (sheet or fabric). I like to lay them diagonally and overlap as needed.

Assemble and sew the quilt top, the batting and the quilt backing together. Use knitting yarn to make the ties. Every 8 to 10 inches bring the yarn down through the quilt, back up through, and make a double knot on top. Continue until you have finished the complete quilt.
