All gold jewelry must be marked with the karat, or purity of gold. Antique jewelry made before 1900 may not be. Buy a precious metals test kit, scratch the surface in an inconspicuous place and test. This will show if the base metal is gold or something else.

Gold is always marked with its amount of karats, usually on the inside of the jewelry. For example, my wedding band says "14k" on the inside of the band. I have taken jewelry in to a jeweler to ask how to identify gold, and this is what he said.

Gold jewelry will have a mark somewhere on the piece that identifies the purity of the gold, such as 10K, etc. If it isn't marked it probably isn't gold.

One can identify real from fake Gold Jewelry by the use of Gold Test Kit. Gold Test Kits usually do not cause damage to real gold jewelry. If at all, your jewelry gets damaged, that it is a probably fake jewelry.
