You need to figure out what is wrong. Be sure there's enough drainage around the tree, and that the dirt slopes away from it. Also, check for an aphid infestation. They can cause damage and should be destroyed. Your tree could be suffering from scorch, too, which will turn the leaves brown. Make sure the tree is getting enough water.

The tree is dying due to lack of nutrition. You will need to drill holes with an auger around the perimeter of the tree and fill them with fertilizer. This will allow the roots to get the nutrients. Irrigate the tree daily and repeat until the tree bounces back.

You want to make sure to keep adding fertilizer to the soil through out the life of the plant to help keep it healthy.

Japanese Maples do not live long and should be fed occasionally. They are also subject to sunburn so if it is hot and dry be sure to spray with cold water or the leaves will curl and die. The tree won't die but it will look bad.

Japanese Maple trees need very little watering and should be in a shaded area with little sunlight daily. You can call a local arborist to come look at the tree is it looks sick.

When did you plant it? If you recently planted it make sure you followed the instructions on planting on the tag that was on the tree. If there wasn't one ask the nursery for help. You may have planted it wrong and shocked the tree. Make sure it is in the correct light, watered well and let it rest.

Here is a little tip that I used when my red maple began to fade. Get regular oatmeal from the store, take three handfuls of it and bury it about 6-12 inches from the surface of the tree and then water the tree as normal.

The first step would be to try pruning back excessive growth that takes nutrition from the tree. Also be sure to remove any and all dead limbs.
