How can I get the smell of cigarette smoke out of my apartment?

The previous tenant smoked and I thought it wasn't that bad at first, but now it's really stinky.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but this is going to be a major undertaking. Strong aromas can help mask the smell, but the real solution is to scrub and clean. Focus most on fabrics like carpeting, rugs, curtains etc. Wallpaper and acoustic ceiling can also absorb smoke.

If the smell is strong and built into the carpets curtains etc it will be a major task to get rid of the smoke smell. One will need to repaint the walls and clean the carpets with deep steam washing but if fails the carpeting will need to be replaced.

Open the windows first. If the smell still is present, consider taking the following measures: wash all of the fabric items in the room such as pillows, upholstery, etc.; paint the walls; scrub the floors or clean the carpets.
