How can I get rid of a gray screen in Mac OS X?

In System Preferences you can click on "Desktop & Screen Saver" that will take you to the window where you can change your screen background. Make sure have have "Desktop" selected at the top and then clicking on the image should change the screen automatically. Apple pre-loads several options, but you can also use photos and your own images also.

It depends on the version of Mac OS X you have got. If right now you are running Mac OS X v10.5, then you should update to Mac OS X v10.6 and most probably your problem will be fixed. If you are already on Mac OS X v10.6 then reinstall Mac OS X v10.6.

If the gray screen is caused by the hard drive being full, than you can empty the hard drive. You can delete the files you don't whant to anymore by using another Mac and plug a wirecable between the two.
