Confirm that your dog's food has enough fiber in it - lower quality dog foods sometimes don't suit some dogs' fiber needs. You can also add some foods to your dog's diet to help things along; plain canned pumpkin, white rice, and low-fat cottage cheese are all recommended by vets.

The quickest and easiest way to get firmer stools is to feed a high quality dog food. While they usually cost more, you feed less. It's simple math. Less food in, less excrement out. There are other advantages to your pet. They will have a nicer coat and the better nutrition will result in better health.

Try high-quality dry food made for puppies. Feed on a regular schedule, amounts as recommended on package. Use bits of the food as training treats, rather than using rich snacks. Provide plenty of fresh, clean water. Walk your dog everyday, and make sure your dog does not eat any "found items" during the walk. If soft stool continues, see vet.

Higher quality foods that have more protein would do it for a healthy dog. If your dog is sick try canned pumpkin, not the pie filling type just the regular.

Keep his diet equal - don't mix much and often. If you're feeding him with industrial foods, get a good brand (a lot of meat - human grade, no conservatives, etc... ) and give him once a week or so a piece of bone. Only big beef bones.

If your dog has loose stool, than you should switch foods. It may be necessary to get a low fiber diet, but probably just switching foods will help. You should, also, should not feed any people food.
